Former Hawaii politician Rod Tam has died due to complications from leukemia. Tam was 65-years-old.

Shawn Hamamoto, who worked for Tam beginning in 1999 when he was a state senator confirmed with KITV4 that Tam had passed away Wednesday.

According to Hamamoto Tam has 'worked very hard for the community and has worked long hours for many years.'

Tam was elected as a Democrat to the State House from 1982 to 1994, the Senate from 1994 to 2002 and served on the City Council in 2002 until an unsuccessful bid for Honolulu Mayor in 2010.

He was diagnosed with leukemia in January 2019.
