HONOLULU - Union hotel workers with Unite Here! Local 5 will rally in Waikiki and protest dozens of unexpected layoffs Wednesday.

Nearly 80 employees at The Modern Honolulu were told they would be let go by the end of the month.

The union filed federal labor charges against the hotel and its parent company, Diamond Resorts, and say the firings come in the middle of labor contract negotiations.

The hotel released a statement yesterday saying it does not take the decision to slash it's workforce lightly. They are also offering severance packages.
