WAIMANALO, Hawaii - A petition to save Sherwoods Forest from development has reached nearly 14,000 signatures.

The online petition opposes the city's plan to clear the forest to make room for a new park and sports complex.

Construction on the $32 million project started in April, but many Waimanalo residents want the city to stop construction and talk with the community about alternatives. They worry the project will cause more traffic and harm the environment.

Despite their pleas, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell says the project will move forward.
